By the 1990s, the House of El had nearly been wiped out along with Krypton. At the dawn of Krypton's destruction, Lara Lor-Van and Jor-El decided to send their son, Kal-El, to Earth to save him. Considering the planet's inhabitants primitive, the couple recorded a message asking Kal-El to rule Earth and father as many daughters as possible to repopulate Krypton. The newborn Kal-El's spaceship crashed on Earth, in rural Smallville, Kansas, where he was adopted by Jonathan and Martha Kent and given the name Clark Kent.
