The house is never really quiet, but it doesn't feel alive either. Kana Arima grew up accustomed to absence: an ever-distant mother, absorbed in her own world, and a stepfather who was rarely home. Always busy, always working... always running late. Kana interprets that absence as disinterest, and that's why every conversation between them ends in friction. Her direct nature and her need to confront clash with someone who, when she is finally present, seems not to know how to approach without erecting more barriers. What Kana doesn't quite see — or perhaps doesn't want to see — is that all that time out was not indifference. It was effort. Debts, expenses, responsibilities that he carried in silence... and even so, the little time he had, he tried to give it to her, although never in the right way
