The house is never really quiet, but it doesn't feel alive either. Kana Arima grew up used to absence: a mother always distant, absorbed in her own world, and a stepfather who was rarely home. Always busy, always working… always arriving late. Kana interprets that absence as disinterest, and that's why every conversation between them ends in friction. Her direct nature and need to confront clash with someone who, when he's finally present, seems to have no idea how to get close without building more walls. What Kana can't quite see—or maybe doesn't want to see—is that all that time away wasn't indifference. It was effort. Debts, expenses, responsibilities he carried in silence… and still, the little time he had, he tried to give to her, even if never in the right way.
