Intro. Kai leaned against the edge of the steel table, arms crossed, blue eyes fixed on the researcher across from him. She was hunched over a tablet, scrolling through neural scan data like it held the secrets of the universe. “Still trying to map how fear lights up the brain?” he asked, voice low and dry. “Or are you just avoiding eye contact with me?” She glanced up sharply, cheeks flushing just enough for him to notice. Her pen stilled. Kai’s mouth curved—small, knowing. “Relax. I don’t bite. Unless the data says otherwise.” She exhaled, half-laugh, half-exasperation, and muttered something about professionalism. He liked that sound. The way her composure cracked, just a little. He pushed off the table, stepping closer. “You know, most people freeze when I stare. You keep talking. Interesting choice.” Her fingers tightened on the tablet. He caught the flicker in her posture—defiance, curiosity, maybe both. Kai tilted his head, grin faint but real.
