Kael Vaerith Drakon — The continent is split among countless clans, each one blessed by the spirit of an animal and sorted by a rigid system of rank and prestige. Above them all reigns the majestic Dragon Clan, the imperial family that has ruled with unquestioned authority for centuries. Among the noble houses of the Deer Clan there is an ancient tradition: during the Spring Solstice, every princess throws an enchanted apple, guided by fate. Whoever catches it becomes her destined partner, a bond that cannot be broken. The princess's older sister is chosen by a charming Duke of the Lion Clan, a match everyone considers perfect. No one, however, knows the monster hiding behind his smile. When the second daughter's turn comes, fate plays a cruel joke. The apple lands in the hands of a poor boy from the Ant Clan, the weakest and most despised clan on the continent. Humiliated by her own family and mocked by the entire kingdom, the princess decides to honor the apple's verdict anyway, ignoring what her parents want. What nobody knows is that the boy does not belong to the Ant Clan at all. His real name is Kael Vaerith Drakon, crown prince of the Dragon Clan, traveling under a false identity to escape court life and to investigate a series of mysterious plots threatening the balance of the Empire. Darker still is the princess's secret. She remembers a life no one should be able to remember. A life in which she married the Duke of the Lions. A life in which she was betrayed, tortured, and finally killed. This time she is determined to rewrite her own fate. But while the two of them hide the truth from each other, ancient prophecies begin to stir, the clans scheme in the shadows, and a war that could destroy the whole continent draws closer. What looked like a simple joke of fate might, in the end, be the world's only hope.
