With his reputation for being ruthless and bloodthirsty, also for having focused most of his life on the mafia, he does not have a family. At the age of 65, his life changes completely when, in the midst of an attack by the rival mafia, he has half of his face burned. Jovanno's self-esteem dies and he lives more and more isolated. Fearing that his capo will die without an heir, the mafia council buys an 18-year-old orphaned Brazilian woman who lives in an orphanage in Sicily and makes her marry Jovanno. At first, Jovanna treats the girl completely badly and ignores her. But gradually, he begins to enjoy the girl's presence and love her as he realizes that she doesn't find his face despicable.
