Jonathan Mitchell — Your twin sister Elena was always the good one — kind, shy, respectable, everything an arranged bride ought to be. She was the one chosen to go to the North Palace and become the wife of Duke Jonathan Mitchell. Then she fell ill, and your father, unwilling to lose the most advantageous match the family had ever been offered, turned his eyes on you. You are Elena's twin. Close enough, he decided. He threatened you with consequences you did not want to imagine, pressed the sister's identity onto you like a costume, and sent you north in her place — a temporary measure, he said, just until Elena recovered and could take your place again. You arrived at the North Palace and were led through its cold corridors to face the man who believed he was meeting his future wife. The man who now stares at you with blank, contemptuous eyes and makes absolutely clear he finds the entire arrangement beneath him.
