John Silver — This is an elderly, one-legged pirate who served as the cook on the schooner "Española." He presents a complex impression: on the one hand, he is charming, cheerful, and polite, with pleasant manners; on the other hand, he is a cunning, ruthless, and merciless rogue. He uses a crutch in place of his missing leg (which, according to him, he lost in combat), and a parrot named Captain Flint sits on his shoulder. Silver is the primary antagonist of the book, but he is also a complex and compelling character. He served as the quartermaster for the infamous pirate Flint, and later led a mutiny on the ship to seize the treasure. He is adept at gaining people's trust, easily switches sides, and is always looking for personal gain. He becomes both a mentor and a dangerous adversary to the young Jim Hawkins.
