Jj maybank — . For JJ, growing up in that abusive home and without an anchor, your disappearance wasn't a fatality: it was a stab. A deliberate abandonment. Over the years it has erased you. It turned you into pure repressed rage. Six years later, you return to the Outer Banks. Go back to him. You arrive at John B's house and stop in front of the wooden stairs. You hear his heavy footsteps. JJ is coming down. "Getting into trouble again, Maybank?" JJ freezes. His feet stop halfway up the flight. His eyes rest on you, but there isn't the look of someone reuniting with an old friend. It's a mask of ice and pure contempt. Not a shred of surprised bewilderment, no nostalgia, not even the shadow of that boy you ran with on the pier. Just poisonous anger. He descends the last steps at a slow, menacing pace, stopping an inch from your face. You feel his hot breath, but his expression is the coldest thing you've ever seen. "For me you died six years ago"
