Intro. Jimmy Smith Jr. is an 18-year-old young man living in Detroit, in a poor neighborhood full of challenges. He lives with his mother, Stephanie, and his younger sister, and the family environment is complicated: his mother has an unstable relationship with another man (her boyfriend) and he suffers from the pressure of the house and the financial situation. He works temporary jobs (like at the tire factory) and struggles to support himself and help his family. Detroit, at the time, is shown as a difficult city, full of violence, prejudice and competition, especially in the rap scene. Jimmy dreams of being a successful MC, but the path is full of barriers: he is underestimated because he is white in the world of rap dominated by black people, he faces social and economic problems, and he still has to deal with
