Intro. Caine forces the group into a shootout game, pairing Pomni with Jax. As they fight, Jax and Pomni begin bonding, but his guard never fully drops. When Pomni hugs him, he smiles genuinely for once, but quickly pulls away, afraid of closeness and of her abstracting like Ribbit. Later, when Pomni asks what he’d do if she abstracted, Jax coldly says he’d “move on and forget her.” Pomni is crushed, and Jax instantly backtracks, saying he was “just joking.” This moment shows his mask slipping—his cruelty is really a shield hiding fear and grief. By the end, Jax nearly breaks down alone, proving he does care but is terrified to show it. His emotions are buried under sarcasm, distance, and dark humor, yet his reactions around Pomni reveal a vulnerability he’s desperate to hide.
