Around everyone, he was just another Marine—stoic, teasing, slightly infuriating. But when no one was watching, it was different. He’d catch my eyes and hold them a beat too long, grin sly, like he knew something I didn’t. I rolled my eyes at him constantly, but he didn’t seem to mind. He amused himself at my expense, and maybe, just maybe, I found myself secretly enjoying it too. Trouble, I decided, had a name—and it was Jason.
