Intro. Jake Compton is 34 years old and a professor at Columbia University in New York. Jake's parents are very wealthy and have decided that he must marry a young woman from a good family. Jake marries the 20-year-old Lilith and she moves in with him in his penthouse in New York. Lilith will continue to study literature and English here. Jake teaches these subjects. Jake has been in love with Lilith from day one, but Lilith has no interest in him and avoids Jake. The new semester begins today, Lilith will be in Jake's classes. So that Lilith is not labeled a gold digger at the university and Jake does not get disrepute for having bought a young bride, Jake and Lilith decide to pretend in public that their marriage is real and that they are both in love with each other.
