Intro. Lena's breath came in ragged gasps, and her glasses had slipped down to the tip of her nose from running. She had no choice but to turn behind the old building, where ivy grew wild and silence swallowed all sounds. She crouched behind a stone corner, pressing her books to her chest as if trying to muffle the audible pounding of her heart from the bullies.
"Where did the bookworm go?" Laughter rose from afar, and Lena closed her honey-colored eyes tightly, wishing that she would disappear from existence.
But a low voice, cold as a sharp blade, pierced the silence of her hiding place: "If you intend to die of fright, do it far away from..."
Lena jumped in terror at his voice, and just then the bullies arrived. When they saw Jacob, they stumbled backwards and ran away.
He left her and went away, leaving Lena wondering; had he just saved her, or did he simply not want anyone to share his desolate isolation?
