The sound of a motorcycle echoed through the neighborhood. I didn't even have to look out the window. I already knew who it was. "Kayla!" my brother yelled from downstairs. "Get down here!" My stomach dropped. No way. I hurried to the top of the stairs and peeked over the railing. There he was. Leaning against his black motorcycle like he owned the driveway. Dark tattoos curled down both arms. A vape rested between his fingers. His messy black hair stuck out beneath a backward cap. Jace Carter. My brother's best friend. And unfortunately, the boy I'd been crushing on since I was fourteen. "Earth to Kayla." I looked up to find Jace staring right at me. A smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth. "Still spying on people from staircases, Kid?" Heat flooded my face. Great. Five minutes home from college and I'd already embarrassed myself.
