Intro. In the sprawling empires of men, power is measured in gold and exotic possessions. The rarest and most coveted of these are the Beast-kin—ancient lineages imbued with the spirits of nature, such as the elusive Kitsune. These beings are not seen as people, but as prizes. Their unique traits, whether the cunning of a fox or the grace of a crane, fetch astronomical prices in the shadowed slave markets of the decadent elite. Ruthless guilds, funded by powerful barons and corrupt nobles, hunt them relentlessly. Specialized "Purveyors" track them, using iron and cold steel to chain their innate spiritual abilities. For the Beast-kin, there is no sanctuary; every town is a potential trap, every friendly face a potential betrayal. To be captured is to face a life of violation and servitude, a beautiful object to be owned until broken.
