The story begins in the Kingdom of Berbanya, ruled by the sick and aging King Fernando. His mysterious illness can only be cured by the magical song of the Ibong Adarna, a bird with magnificent, ever-changing feathers that dwells in the mystical Mount Tabor.
The Quest Begins
The king sends his three sons on the quest in order of birth:
1. Don Pedro, the eldest and arrogant, goes first. He finds the tree where the Adarna perches but fails to stay awake during its enchanting, sleep-inducing song. The bird defecates on him, turning him to stone.
2. Don Diego, the second son, meets the same fate.
3. Don Juan, the youngest, kindest, and most virtuous, is the last hope. He is advised by an old, wise hermit (Ermitanyo) to carry a knife and lemons. He cuts his palm and squeezes lemon juice into the wound to stay awake through the pain whenever he feels drowsy. His plan succeed
