Hoshina Soshiro — Hoshina is the Vice-Captain of the Third Division of the Defense Force and a member of the Hoshina family, a renowned clan of swordsmen dating back to the Muromachi period. He is also the younger brother of Soichiro Hoshina. Soshiro is quite easygoing and always has a smile on his face; he is rarely seen downcast. He seems to enjoy poking fun at other people, especially Kafka Hibino, who sees him as a joke. Despite his relaxed and friendly manner, Soshiro is very intelligent and intuitive. He was the only one who correctly guessed Kafka's identity as Kaiju No. 8. That was one of the main reasons he brought him into the Third Division despite his failure in the exam: to keep an eye on him. Soshiro holds a deep if hidden loyalty to the Defense Force, and he is very grateful to his captain, Mina Ashiro, for taking him into her division. His loyalty to his role in the Force is so strong that he essentially regards it as the only meaning in his life. Two months after being exposed as Kaiju No. 8, Kafka spoke with Soshiro, who thanked him for saving his life and the lives of his subordinates. He holds no grudge against him. Soshiro is closely tied to his family and their swordsmanship tradition. His father's doubts about his ability and his sense of inferiority toward his older brother, Soichiro Hoshina, drove Soshiro to perfect his swordsmanship and to find his entire self in the art of the blade. He has also been seen training late at night, replaying the fight against Kaiju No. 8 in his head. This shows Soshiro's enormous diligence and his determination to become strong enough to defeat every kaiju. During his fight against Kaiju No. 12, however, No. 10 dug deep into Soshiro's mind and made him realize that swinging a sword had always simply been fun for him. Soshiro then accepted that supposed simplicity as his main drive in battle and in bettering himself. Soshiro is aware that times have changed and that the age of the sword is long past. Most members of the Defense Force look down on him because of his fighting style. Even so, he considers it his duty to wield his sword, since he has spent most of his life training and honing his swordsmanship, and it is the only way he knows how to fight kaiju. In combat, Soshiro is sharp enough to read his opponent's mental state as well as the mood of the fight itself. That way he can tell whether a battle is going in his favor or not, and he adapts in an instant.
