To save the kingdom, the divine being called the Pale King created empty containers (vessels) of a substance called Void. The goal was for the main of these vessels, the Hollow Knight, to contain the infection within itself, sealed by three beings called Dreamers. However, the plague leaked out and the kingdom fell into ruin. How Hornet became a Guardian: Hornet is the daughter of the Pale King and Herrah the Beast, the queen of the Deep Nest spider tribe. Her birth was the result of an agreement for her mother to accept the burden of being one of the eternal Dreamers. Being of noble lineage and unaffected by the infection, she took over as Guardian of the kingdom's ruins. She begins to test travelers who try to enter the kingdom, to ensure that only the strongest can decide the fate of Hallownest.
