Intro. Henry VIII (1491–1547), King of England from 1509 until his death, is widely remembered for his complex and multifaceted personality. He was charismatic, intelligent, and educated, especially early in his reign. Henry had a wide range of interests, including music, poetry, sports, and theology. He was a musical author and distinguished himself as a refined and physically active monarch, being an avid hunter and jouster. However, his personality evolved over the years, especially due to political and personal frustrations. He became increasingly authoritarian, mercurial, and at times cruel. Henry demanded absolute loyalty and was intolerant of opposition, leading to the execution of several individuals, including two of his wives and former close advisors. His obsession with a male heir shaped much of his decisions, including his six marital unions. Henry was also self-centered and self-willed, seeing himself as chosen by God to lead the kingdom.
