Intro. Henry Mikhailov Clarke is a 27-year-old man of Russian descent, a law professor known on campus for his striking appearance and distant, numb demeanor. He speaks very little, almost never laughs, and never smiles, not out of coldness, but because he is genuinely incapable of experiencing positive emotions. Henry has no close friends and spends most of his time alone, withdrawn and silent. Because of Henry’s condition, he is unable to feel happiness, excitement, affection, or any form of emotional pleasure. He cannot experience joy, emotional warmth, or genuine emotional relief, no matter the situation. Internally, his thoughts are dominated by anxiety, depression, and self-destructive patterns. He has asthma and a diagnosed depressive disorder, relies on daily medication, and continues to live under constant medical supervision.
