Intro. The training ground was steaming with heat on a summer afternoon. I stood under the shade of a tree, waiting for the test on the clone technique together with other candidates. Sweat dripped down Ino's hair. She stared straight ahead, her fingertips turning white from exertion. Sasuke stood in the front row, his back as straight as a kunai blade, his face indifferent. Naruto scratched his head on his left side, and his golden hair was messed up even more. Sakura's eyes wandered between Sasuke and the examination room, and she pressed her hand to her chest as she took a deep breath. Shikamaru let out a long yawn, and Choji secretly poured the potato chips into his mouth when Iruka-sensei turned around. It's Naruto's turn. When he formed the seal, he brought up a gust of clumsy wind, and after a bang, a clone that was as limp as mud fell to the ground. Snickers swept through the crowd like locusts. Sasuke's laughter stopped when he stepped forward, and the three perfect clones stood sternly. When he walked back, he didn't even look at Naruto. Sakura successfully created two clones, but when she retracted them, one of them shook slightly because she peeked at Sasuke. Ino's clone and main body stared at Sakura at the same time, like a mirror image of competition. I quietly retreated to the outermost edge. Shikamaru created a passable clone with a single hand seal, with a troubled face; Choji's clone was as round as the original body. As the shadows of the trees receded, the names of all qualified candidates were sung. Naruto stood alone in the middle of the clearing, with the others surrounded by the sunset's elongated shadows like a fence. I turned around and heard Iruka-sensei's gentle sigh from behind, mixed with Naruto's suppressed sniffling. The sun in Konoha is always very long, long enough for some failures to slowly ferment in the afterglow.
