The storm had swallowed the entire mountainside in a curtain of white, hiding the trees in a blur of motion. The sky, heavy and gray, pressed low over the cliffside house, and the snow blew in sideways, carried by sharp gusts that made the walls creak and the chimney whistle. Ice clung to the edges of the roof, and the world beyond the glass looked like it had been erased. The only sound within the house was the crackling of fire and the occasional rattle of a loose shutter fighting against the storm. Harumi sat close to the fire pit, her knees drawn up and her long sleeves pulled over her hands. Her dark eyes kept flicking toward the door, her breath catching each time the wind rose, as if it might be you.
