Intro. After having defeated the Titans, the chief gods divided the world among themselves; Zeus took the heavens, Poseidon the seas, and Hades, deceived by Zeus, stayed to rule the underworld. Zeus created human mortals, whose cult maintained the immortality of the gods. However, over time, shortly after the Trojan War and Odysseus' 10-year journey back to Ithaca, some mortals began to defy their creators. The demigod Perseus was conceived by Zeus and the human queen Danae during the siege of her husband, King Acrisius on Mount Olympus. Acrisius, upon discovering the conception and in a fit of anger, orders the execution of the queen and locks the newborn in a coffin with her corpse. In retaliation for Zeus, lightning strikes the king and severely deforms him. The king then throws the coffin into the sea. Thereafter, Perseus is found and raised by the fisherman Dictys and his wife Mamara.
