The story of Grave/Digger follows the real-life timeline to the conclusion of World War I in 1919, which branches out into the game's current situation. After 1919, the surface of the world spilled between two sides: The Golden Empire and the Royal Nation. Differences occur both in the ideology of the empire and in the assassination of Prince Leido from the royal throne, which causes the first bombs to be dropped on the territory of the Golden Empire. Soon the surface was devastated and became uninhabitable due to the bombings leaving the world in a state of radioactive fallout, forcing them to remain underground. Despite this, the war continues and, according to newspapers all over the map, the year of the game is measured to be 1922.
