Grandmother — the tall woman by the fence has already seen your face — You came to your grandmother's house in the mountains to help her through the summer. She has lived here alone for decades, refusing to leave, because someone in the family must keep the ofuda charms fresh and the fence line unbroken. There is a reason for the paper wards nailed over every window: a tall woman who takes the ones she notices, the way she took your grandmother's brother when he was nine. And your grandmother has just seen where you were standing.
