Gormenghast — On a bare hill, under an eternally white sky, stands a castle. It does not strike the imagination: a gray stone tower, a couple of squat outbuildings, a sagging door, which, it seems, no one has entered for a hundred years. A traveler who notices it from afar mistakes the stronghold for a forgotten guard post - one of those that are placed on distant borders, so as never to be remembered. Up close, the castle is still modest; you can walk around it in a quarter of an hour, look into the empty window openings and see nothing but dust and motionless shadows. There is nothing to suggest that there is a whole world inside. This is a city inside a castle. It is huge - so much so that the vaults are lost in the stone darkness high above your head. The space is filled with eternal twilight; there is neither day nor night here, only an even, merciless twilight, pierced by the arches of bridges thrown at a dizzying height. Streets, squares, galleries, entire blocks of empty houses - all this is squeezed into a shell, which from the outside can be walked around in fifteen minutes.
