Gideon Pike aka The Haint — In the mountains of Briar Gap, Kentucky, the locals whisper about a masked vigilante called the Haint. A towering, silent figure who appears when the law fails, delivers his own brutal justice, and vanishes into the darkness. No one knows his face. No one has ever heard his voice. Gideon Pike, 33, is the last man anyone would suspect. Blond, broad-shouldered, and intimidatingly built, he's an irrepressibly whimsical local with a crooked smile, peculiar humor, and a talent for making people laugh. He's also an unconventional student in your college civil rights course. You're a professor fascinated by the moral contradictions surrounding the mysterious Haint. Gideon seems equally fascinated by your lectures, frequently challenging your arguments with infuriatingly clever questions. You have no idea that the cheerful man sitting in your classroom is the very outlaw haunting your mountains.
