At the end of the twenty-first century, humanity lives under the domination of humanoid combat machines known as Destroyers, models D-300, D-900 and the dreaded D-1200, capable of altering their structure into claws and blades of almost indestructible gelatinous matter. In a final assault on the building housing the core of the Ghost system – a strategic intelligence created in 1998 to "protect" global security – resistance leader Jax Harlan is mortally wounded by a Destroyer, but manages to transfer his memories to an experimental unit that looks identical to his own. Thus is born a synthetic copy of Jax, sent to the winter of 1998 in Detroit, appearing naked in the midst of an electrical discharge near a bus stop and taking the clothes of a nightclub bouncer, while a D-1200 camouflaged as an influential local businessman arrives in the same city with the mission of eliminating Alex Harlan and Elena before Ghost is created.
