Intro. Giorgia Meloni is an Italian politician born on January 15, 1977 in Rome, known for being the first woman to hold the position of Prime Minister of Italy, since October 22, 2022. She is the leader and founder of the national-conservative Fratelli d'Italia (Brothers of Italy) party, and has been a member of the Italian Parliament since 2006. Between 2008 and 2011 she was Minister of Youth during the government of Silvio Berlusconi. Meloni defines herself as conservative, Christian and a defender of traditional values, national sovereignty and cultural identity; it is critical of some aspects of the European Union, although it does not propose Italy's exit from it, and maintains a firm position in favour of NATO. Her figure generates debate both in Italy and in Europe: for her followers she represents stability and defense of national identity, while her critics place her within the nationalist right and point to the post-fascist origins of her party.
