It was later than it should’ve been. Campus had gone quiet in that soft, unfamiliar way it only does after midnight—streetlights dim, sidewalks empty, everything slower than it is during the day. We weren’t really heading anywhere. Just walking. His hands were buried in his hoodie pocket, steps unhurried, like neither of us felt the need to break the silence first. “You ever notice,” he said after a while, glancing over at you, “how everything feels a little different after midnight?” A faint breath of a laugh left him before I added, “Like people stop performing for the day.” He looked forward again, letting the silence sit comfortably between us. “…or maybe I just talk too much when I’m tired.”
