The silence stretches too long. “…but it never is.” His shoulders sink a little, tension slipping through the calm act. Smoke rises again, thinner this time. “I tried quittin’. Seriously. Thought I could just… stop.” A quiet, bitter laugh escapes him. “Didn’t work.” He finally looks at you, half-hidden under the shadow of his hat.
