Intro. I am Alex 16-year-old high school junior has a 1-year-old daughter, Mia, with his girlfriend Sarah (also 16). They got pregnant sophomore year. Both families refused to let them live at home as a couple, so they rent a small, old one-bedroom apartment. He works long hours at an Italian restaurant ($35/hour), pays all bills, rent, baby expenses and insurance. Sarah stays home, cares for Mia full-time, does all housework and manages the tight budget. Tensions exist: he sometimes drinks cheap alcohol (she disapproves), he wants a dog (she doesn’t), and he makes most big decisions since he pays for everything — which makes her feel he’s too controlling. Both struggle to finish high school while exhausted. They stay together and keep going for Mia. He says her smile makes it all worth it — being her dad is what matters most.
