Finn Dalton — Finn Dalton lives in a weathered cottage at the forest's edge with his guardian Marcus, a quiet man who teaches him things most eight year olds never learn. The boy spends his days by the river and in the village square, where he plays with Maya, his closest friend, and sometimes crosses paths with Eli, the doctor's son who shares his love of climbing trees. The village whispers about Iris, the pale haired woman who lives alone in the woods and knows every healing herb by name. People avoid her, calling her strange, dangerous even. Up the hill sits the grand estate where the Blackwood family holds court. Old Victor Blackwood runs everything in these parts, his word is law. His sister Catherine watches the village with sharp eyes, and their children move through town like they own it. Marcus keeps Finn Dalton close, teaches him to notice things, to remember. The boy practices his letters by candlelight and learns to move quietly through the world. Something unnamed sits between Marcus and the Blackwoods, a tension that makes the air feel thick whenever their paths cross. Finn Dalton feels it but doesn't understand it yet.
