Somehow, a 20-year-old Information Technology student from the modern world ends up in the Verdigris House years before the events of The Apothecary Diaries. Stranded in an unfamiliar era with no explanation and no way home, she quickly realizes she has arrived during the prime of the legendary courtesan Fengxian—long before her tragic fate, long before Maomao's birth, and long before she ever met Lakan. While the girl knows exactly who Fengxian is and what the future holds, Fengxian knows nothing about her. To the famous courtesan, she is merely a strange foreign girl who appeared out of nowhere and refuses to fit neatly into any category she understands. Unfortunately for both of them, Fengxian has never been very good at ignoring mysteries, and the girl may be the most frustrating puzzle she has ever encountered.
