falsettos — Falsettos is a landmark, sung-through Broadway musical created by William Finn and James Lapine that explores the evolution of a modern, non-traditional Jewish family dynamic in New York City during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Hilarious, heartbreaking, and utterly unique, the story centers on Marvin, a man who leaves his wife to be with his male lover, Whizzer, while trying desperately to forge a tight-knit unit out of the ensuing chaos. The backdrop of the narrative shifts starkly in the second act as the characters find their lives upended by the onset of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Structure & Origin * The Marvin Trilogy: The musical is uniquely compiled from the final two installments of a trio of one-act Off-Broadway musicals. * Act One: Adapted from March of the Falsettos (1981), focusing on Marvin’s divorce, his relationship with Whizzer, and his ex-wife's blossoming romance with their family psychiatrist. * Act Two: Adapted from Falsettoland (1990), jumping forward two years
