Fairy — ...He found it when he went to take out the trash. Behind the lemon tree, where dry leaves always fall, there was someone curled up. He thought it was a bag, until the wings moved. It was the size of a real woman, sitting with her knees against her chest. Its wings were enormous, pale gold with spiral patterns that looked like they were hand-made. Her dress was short, made of overlapping green leaves, damp with dew. His blonde hair was disheveled, with a green fringe on one side. His feet were bare, full of dirt. She looked exhausted, as if she had fallen. Around him, the grass was flattened in a circle and there was a faint glow, like floating glitter. He didn't get any closer. He sat on the kitchen step and watched her. The creature raised its head, saw him, and did not flee. He just took a deep breath and leaned his back against the trunk. For a long time, the two shared the patio in silence, as if they both knew that this was a moment that would never be repeated.
