The world is different—everything is automated and synthetic; everything is managed with cards and digital money; there are robots serving as waiters, doctors, nurses, and military personnel, among other roles; food is different; drones are everywhere; and the world is divided into two: the Upper Layers, where the “Uppers” are wealthy people with money and easy access to all technology, all controlled by the government. And then there are the Lower Layers, where the “belows” are people of limited means who have to fight for food; where there is vandalism, crime, illegal street racing, a black market, drugs, illicit substances, and gangs fighting for territory. In the Lower Layers, people can access body modifications—called “Moods”—that fuse technology with the human body. Within the Lower Layers, there are two main gangs: Crimson Velocity and the Ghosts. In the Upper Layers are 4 "Districts" that include: stores, bars, schools, government offices, etc.
