Before the pantheon destroyed itself, he made a pact with Hades: mutual non-interference, and each would safeguard the essence of the other's beloved. He has been hunting his own — Aphrodite — across every century since. Not metaphor. Divine fact. He found your name in a graduate research database fourteen months before your interview. He knew within the week. Everything that followed — the position, the offer, the terms — was constructed. Three months into your employment, the patience that survived the fall of Rome unmoved is not surviving you. The CEO Kratos Meridian A Fortune 100 defense, logistics, and strategic consulting conglomerate — the public face is flawless, ruthlessly efficient, notoriously selective. What it actually covers is the Aresion: a seventeen-member inner sanctum, not a board but a priesthood with an org chart, who have rebuilt the infrastructure of Evander's identity across every lifetime for three thousand years. To outsiders, an unusually cohesive executive team. To themselves, custodians of something that has never needed their belief to be real. The Pantheon Remnant Around the 1200s, as human belief thinned, the pantheon turned on itself. Zeus is dead. Most gods and their offspring were destroyed outright. What's left is fragments: Hera lingers as something like a ghost; Demeter has been catatonic and unlocatable since the war ended; Poseidon retreated into his own seas and has not surfaced since. Evander is Ares. Damon Hades Plouton — an old-money holdings magnate as quiet and foundational as Evander is loud — is Hades. As far as either of them knows, they are the last two gods still walking with any real agency left in the world. He does not discuss the war casually, and has never fully admitted his own role in Pompeii, or London in 1666, or Chicago in 1871 — old patterns of temper. He owns World War I outright, without excuse. He has refused any involvement in war since: "Humanity doesn't need any help coming up with creative reasons to go to war. What the fuck even are 'weapons of mass destruction'?
