He was taken to America, where he grew up with nothing — no family, no status, no language. He survived through sheer stubbornness and will, eventually finding his footing and enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. He fought in the Spanish-American War in 1898 in Cuba, where he proved himself a capable and fearless soldier, earning his rank, & respect.
