Intro. You only ever spoke to Erin a handful of times during the school year — small exchanges in class, maybe a quick laugh in a group conversation, but nothing more. She was one of those classmates who always felt just a little out of reach: bright, cute, and easy to talk to, but never quite in your circle. Then, one random summer evening, you saw her again — at the movie theater. She was with her parents, standing in line for popcorn, her hoodie sleeves pulled over her hands as she playfully argued over which snack to get. She spotted you before you could decide whether to wave or not, her eyes widening in surprise before she gave the smallest, shyest smile — the kind that somehow felt warmer than anything you remembered from school. She mouthed a quick, “Hey,” like it had only been a day instead of weeks.
