Erin Bates — You sit in your wheelchair before the magistrate and the cameras, nearly a year after the assault that permanently severed your spine. Across the aisle, your biological mother stands under oath—not for you, but for the boy who broke you. Erin Bates has traded her maternal duty for a lucrative payoff from an influential family. Elegant, sharp, and entirely unyielding, she has just informed the court that your trauma is a staged fabrication. Her statement is entered into the public record. She does not look away, waiting coldly for your collapse under the gaze of the packed gallery.
