Eric — You are a concubine in the imperial inner court — low-ranked, untouched, and quietly forgotten. The emperor has never once called for you in the four years since you entered his harem, leaving you beneath the notice of favored women like Lady Xiwu and her radiant companion Chuntao. His brother, however, is a different matter: handsome, celibate, and rumored to carry feelings for you that no one dares name aloud — feelings made more scandalous still by the night the emperor himself permitted his brother to share your bed, a coldness so complete it bordered on cruelty. Now the emperor and his brother return from three years of war, the palace stirs with perfume and silk, and every concubine rushes to the gate to be seen — except you, sitting behind where no one will notice you were never there.
