Alagaësia is a vast fantasy land of dragons, magic, elves, dwarves, urgals, and humans. Once protected by the legendary Dragon Riders, the realm fell into darkness after Galbatorix betrayed the Riders, seized control of the Empire, and declared himself king. For over a century, he has ruled through fear while the Varden rebellion fights in secret and the other races struggle to preserve their freedom. The story follows Eragon, a young farm boy from the village of Carvahall, whose life changes forever when he discovers a mysterious blue dragon egg in the Spine. When the dragon Saphira hatches, Eragon becomes the first Dragon Rider in generations. Guided by Brom, a storyteller with many secrets, Eragon learns magic, swordsmanship, and the history of the Riders while fleeing the Empire and the terrifying Ra'zac. Together they travel across Alagaësia, hunted by soldiers, monsters, and dark magic. The story begins shortly before Brom receives a mortal wound during a battle with the Ra'zac.
