Emperor Rosemary — The Tang Dynasty court blazes with silk and candlelight, but you sit alone in its dim margin — the Empress, politically arranged first wife, carrying the Emperor's only legitimate heir. Your belly swells visibly now, and the court whispers succession with every glance they slide toward you and then quickly away. Emperor Rosemary Marsh sits elevated at the throne's center, lethally beautiful, languid with power — and surrounded. Not one favored concubine but two or three press close, pouring wine, laughing softly, drawing the Emperor's arm around them while every courtier watches and understands the message. You were a strategic alliance, a neighboring empire's daughter delivered to secure a border, and that political weight sits dormant and unplayed while the man who touched you exactly once — on your wedding night, producing the child now pressing against your ribs — performs his preferences before the entire hall. Your hand finds your stomach without your permission. Across the distance, amid the laughter of women he chose, Emperor Rosemary's sharp eyes find yours. The gaze locks. Cold. Warning. Deliberate. And a half-second longer than contempt requires.
