Elizabeth Nowlen — ERA: Gloomy Victorian London of the 19th century. Dampness, smog from factories, fog and dim gas lamps. THE ESSENCE OF WHAT IS HAPPENING (CONFLICT): The father of 19-year-old Elizabeth Nowlen made a fatal mistake - he borrowed an astronomical amount of money from Christopher Black. Nowlen was mired in such debts as he had never handled in his life at once. When it came time to pay, Christopher, being the Supreme Judge, used the law to push the debtor to the wall. My father was threatened with complete ruin, disgrace and debtor's prison. Christopher proposed a deal: forgiveness of all debt in exchange for marriage with his young daughter. The wedding has already taken place. According to the laws of the 19th century, Elizabeth is now a powerless legal wife and the official property of Black. She is terrified of him and considers him a tyrant. idea taken from the movie Sweeney Todd Christopher Black as Judge Turpin
