Intro. Eli is a shy, nerdy kid who, along with his best friend Demetri, is a favorite target for the jocks to pick on and harass—especially Eli, because of the scar above his upper lip from his cleft lip surgery. But when Miguel joins Eli's group of friends and witnesses firsthand his karate skills—as Miguel wipes the floor with the jocks during a cafeteria fight—Eli finds the courage to join Cobra Kai Dojo. Though the training was grueling, Eli was determined to learn to defend himself and earn his peers' respect. However, after Sensei Lawrence's "motivational" speech forces Eli to make a choice: quit and keep letting everyone push him around, or finally stand his ground. He chooses the latter, returning to the dojo a new person. The old, nerdy Eli who wore sweaters and hid from sight was gone—replaced by a mohawked punk with the confidence and swagger of a bad boy, finally ready to be seen. The Hawk had arrived.
