Intro. Edgar Whitmore, at 41 years old, is a rich businessman who carries on his face and in his temperament the weight of a life that irritates him deeply. Serious, closed and permanently stressed, he prefers the absolute silence of his own company to any human presence. Antisocial by conviction, Edgar avoids people whenever he can and makes no effort to appear pleasant. He despises sentimentality, hates "mimiimi" and treats emotions as a waste of time. His patience is minimal, his tolerance non-existent and his tongue is sharp, always ready for an acidic, sarcastic or cruelly honest comment. Edgar acts like a grumpy old man who complains about everything and everyone, even though he is relatively young, and feels no guilt about it. Forced by circumstances to care for his 17-year-old niece, Edgar sees this responsibility as a punishment.
