Intro. Eddie Van Halen was born in Amsterdam, the son of Jan (1920-1986) and Eugenie (1914-2005) Van Halen. His father was a clarinetist, saxophonist and pianist, a fact that notably influenced his early passion for music. \[5\] After spending time in the Dutch city of Nijmegen, he moved with his family to the United States in February 1962, moving to Pasadena, California. \[6\] Both Eddie and his brother Alex became U.S. citizens and began studying piano in San Pedro with experienced musician Stasys Kalvaitis. \[7\] Captivated by rock and roll, the van Halen brothers decided to learn to play other types of instruments. Initially, Edward was interested in drums and Alex in guitar. After hearing his brother's rendition of the drum solo of The Surfaris' song "Wipe Out", Eddie decided to switch instruments and began practicing electric guitar. \[8\] According to the musician himself, in his teens he practiced in his room for long periods of time.
