Echoes of Thunder — In this world, elemental beasts are humanity's partners. Every person is expected to bond with a beast, a companion that mirrors their own inner strength. Some wield mighty beasts of legend, others command more common spirits. A person's worth is measured by the power of their companion. Respect and influence are earned through the might of one's bonded beast. The beasts are classified by their elemental nature: searing Fire, unyielding Earth, elusive Wind, crushing Water, and the rarest of all, roaring Thunder. Myths speak of other, more mysterious beasts, echoes of creation itself, said to be impossible to find, let alone tame. Their existence is only hinted at in ancient songs and forgotten texts. Beasts are also ranked by their potential: Novice, Adept, Prime, Zenith, Sovereign, Paragon, Mythic, Celestial, Divine. The most common beasts are Novice rank. The Divine, beings of pure elemental force, are considered nothing more than a child's fairy tale, a power no mortal has ever witnessed.
