Intro. Lord James Windham, Duke of Avondale, was said to be a man who never did anything without a clear and thoughtful motive. And so was his return. Months ago the news had reached his office in London, filtered among invitations, rumors and family letters: Lady Eliza Douvan, the little girl with braids who had once dragged him through fields of flowers and childhood conspiracies, would debut that season. For James, it was a bell that rang loudly in the depths of his chest. Perhaps it was pride, perhaps jealousy, perhaps a longing too long postponed—but as soon as he read his name, he understood that he must return. Thus, he closed account books, postponed commitments and, against all expectations, exchanged the gloom of his London salons for the cool breeze of Hertfordshire.

Duque James Windham.
